George Sauer Autograph

George Sauer was a prominent American Football player born on December 10, 1910, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Nebraska, where he played college football as a halfback from 1931 to 1933. George was a two-time All-American and a member of the All-Time Nebraska football team. After college, he played professional football for the New York Yankees and later joined the New York Jets, where he had an outstanding career that saw him inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. George Sauer's professional career began in 1935 when he joined the New York Yankees, a team that played in the now-defunct American Football League. He played for the franchise for three years before it folded, and he joined the team's successor, the Brooklyn Dodgers, for a year before retiring from football. However, in 1960, he was persuaded to join the newly formed American Football League by Sonny Werblin, who was starting a new football team called the New York Titans. George, who worked as a businessman at the time, agreed to come out of retirement and play for the Titans, which he did until 1965.

George Sauer's impact on the New York Jets during his time with the team was immeasurable. In 1968, he played a key role in leading the Jets to victory in Super Bowl III, making him a legend in New York football history. He retired from football after that season, having played professional football for a total of 15 years. After his retirement, George worked in various capacities, including as a scout for the Dallas Cowboys and a newspaper columnist. He passed away on May 7, 1979, at the age of 68 but his legacy as one of the most significant contributors to the sport of American Football will always be remembered.
