George Taliaferro Autographs
George Taliaferro was a trailblazing football player, whose career spanned the 1940s and 1950s, and broke barriers that opened doors for future athletes of color. He was born on January 8, 1927, in Gates, Tennessee, and his family moved to Indiana when he was young. He excelled in athletics in high school, and was awarded a scholarship to Indiana University, where he played football, basketball, and ran track.
Taliaferro played halfback in college, where he quickly made a name for himself as an exceptional player. He was the first African American player to be drafted by a National Football League (NFL) team in 1949, selected by the Chicago Bears. However, he declined their offer, opting instead to play for the Los Angeles Dons in the All-America Football Conference. He made history again when he signed with the New York Yanks in 1950, becoming the first African American player to be signed to an NFL team. Throughout his NFL career, Taliaferro played for the Yanks/Bulldogs, Dallas Texans, Baltimore Colts, and the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection and helped lead the Colts to win the 1958 NFL Championship.
Taliaferro's athletic talents went beyond football. In track and field, he set multiple records and medaled in the 1948 Summer Olympics. He also became a beloved educator, serving as a professor and administrator at numerous universities, including Indiana University, The University of Maryland, and Tennessee State University. Taliaferro passed away in October 2018 at the age of 91, but his legacy as a football pioneer and educator has left a profound impact on American sports and society as a whole.
