Giovani Bernard is an American professional football player who was born on November 22, 1991, in Boca Raton, Florida. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he played football as a running back. During his high school career, Bernard set school records for career rushing yards, with 3,077, and single-season rushing yards, with 1,641, and was named Florida 5A Player of the Year in 2009.
After graduating from high school, Giovani Bernard accepted a scholarship offer to play football for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In his freshman year, he was named ACC Rookie of the Year after rushing for 1,253 yards and 13 touchdowns. He continued his success on the field in his sophomore year, recording 1,228 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, before missing most of his junior year due to injury. He then decided to forgo his senior year and declared himself eligible for the 2013 NFL Draft.
In the 2013 NFL Draft, Giovani Bernard was selected in the second round, 37th overall, by the Cincinnati Bengals. In his rookie year, he rushed for 695 yards and 5 touchdowns, and also caught 56 passes for 514 yards and 3 touchdowns. He continued to play for the Bengals until 2020, earning the nickname "Gio" and becoming known for his versatility and ability to catch passes out of the backfield. He then signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 and won a Super Bowl in his first season with the team. Throughout his NFL career, Giovani Bernard has rushed for 3,222 yards and 22 touchdowns, and caught 342 passes for 2,867 yards and 11 touchdowns.
