Under Schiano's leadership, Rutgers football achieved a number of impressive milestones and accomplishments. In 2006, the team achieved its first winning season in 13 years, going 11-2 and winning the Texas Bowl. The following year, Rutgers won its first ever bowl game, the International Bowl, and finished the season ranked 12th in the nation. In 2009, Schiano was named the Big East Coach of the Year after leading the Scarlet Knights to their fourth straight bowl appearance. Throughout his tenure at Rutgers, Schiano was credited with a number of innovations, including the use of sports science and analytics to improve player performance, and the introduction of the "Chop," a form of motivational chanting that became a symbol of the program's success.

After leaving Rutgers in 2011, Schiano spent several years coaching in the NFL, serving as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2012 to 2013 and as an assistant coach for the New England Patriots and Ohio State Buckeyes. In 2019, he was re-hired as the head coach of Rutgers, a move that was widely celebrated by fans and alumni of the program. While Schiano's second tenure at Rutgers has been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, his return to the Scarlet Knights is seen as a promising signal of the program's future success.
