Harry Gilmer Autograph

Harry Gilmer was an American football quarterback and halfback who played professionally for eight seasons in the National Football League (NFL) in the 1940s and 1950s. Gilmer was born on April 14, 1926, in Birmingham, Alabama, and was a standout high school athlete, excelling in both football and basketball. In 1948, Gilmer was drafted first overall by the Washington Redskins and played as their quarterback for three seasons, earning the nickname "The Golden Boy" due to his outstanding play. He was known for his versatility and could play multiple positions, including quarterback, running back, and receiver. After his stint with the Redskins, Gilmer moved on to play for the Detroit Lions, where he stayed until 1954. He played his final two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he contributed both as a player and as an assistant coach.

Throughout his career, Harry Gilmer recorded impressive stats, including nearly 7,500 yards passing, 3,000 yards rushing, and 79 total touchdowns. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and was named to the NFL's 1940s All-Decade team.
