Herman EdwardsHerman Edwards is a former American football player and coach who has made significant contributions to the sport. Edwards was born on April 27, 1954, in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, USA. He attended Monterey High School in California, where he played football as a defensive back. He later attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he played college football from 1972 to 1974.
After college, Edwards signed with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL) as an undrafted free agent. He became a starting cornerback for the Eagles in his rookie season and played with the team until 1985, making it to the Pro Bowl in 1980. Edwards later played a season with the Atlanta Falcons before retiring from the NFL in 1986. He then became a scout for the Kansas City Chiefs before becoming a defensive backs coach, a role that he held from 1992 to 1995.
Edwards became a head coach in the NFL in 2001 when he was hired by the New York Jets, a position he held until 2005. In his first season, he led the Jets to the playoffs, where they lost in the Divisional Round to the Oakland Raiders. Edwards coached the Jets for four seasons, compiling a 39-41 record. After leaving the Jets, he became the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006 to 2008, where he compiled a 15-33 record. Edwards has since become an NFL analyst for ESPN and has been a frequent contributor to the network's football coverage.
