Houston Antwine Autographs

Houston Antwine was an American football player who was born on April 11, 1939, in Southern Pines, North Carolina. He grew up playing football and basketball at Carver High School in Spindale, North Carolina. After graduating, he enrolled at Southern Illinois University and played football as a defensive tackle for the Salukis. He was a standout player at SIU and was named a first-team All-American in both 1959 and 1960. Antwine was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the fifth round of the 1961 American Football League (AFL) draft, but he ultimately signed with the Boston Patriots.
Antwine spent 11 seasons with the Patriots between 1961 and 1972, becoming a key player on the team's defensive line. He was known for his toughness and tackling ability, and he helped lead the Patriots to their first-ever division title in 1963. Over his career, Antwine was named to six AFL All-Star Games and was selected as a first team All-Pro in 1963 and 1964. By the time he retired after the 1972 season, he had recorded 39.5 sacks and 16 fumble recoveries. Antwine was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2015.
After retiring from football, Antwine returned to his alma mater of Southern Illinois University and worked as an assistant coach for three seasons. He also worked as a special education teacher in Peabody, Massachusetts, for many years. In 2005, Antwine was diagnosed with dementia, which was believed to be caused by the many concussions he suffered during his football career. He passed away on December 26, 2011, at the age of 72. Despite the challenges he faced after his playing days, Antwine will long be remembered as one of the greatest defensive players in Patriots history.
