In 1941, Gallarneau was drafted by the Chicago Bears and made an immediate impact in the NFL despite his small size (5’10’’, 175 pounds). Due to his exceptional speed, quickness, and agility, he became an amazing kick return specialist, and also played as a halfback, fullback, and defensive back. He played a critical role in the Bears’ 73-0 win over the Washington Redskins in the 1940 NFL Championship game, returning a kickoff 44 yards to the Redskins' 15-yard line, setting up the Bears' first score. He helped them win another championship in 1941, and was named to the All-Pro team twice.

Gallarneau’s football career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the U.S. Army for four years. When he returned to the NFL in 1946, he played for the Green Bay Packers for one season before retiring in 1947. He then pursued a career in the insurance industry and worked in that field for over 30 years. He was inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1979 and the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame in 1988. Gallarneau passed away on March 26, 1992, at the age of 75. Read even more about Hugh Gallarneau at Wikipedia
