Born on July 26, 1998, in Olathe, Kansas, he attended Olathe North High School and played multiple positions including safety, receiver, and linebacker. Simmons moved on to play college football for Clemson Tigers, where he became a standout player. He played in all 15 games of his freshman year, earning his first start in the national championship game against Alabama. In his junior year, Simmons won the Butkus Award, given annually to the nation's best linebacker. He also won the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, making him the first Clemson player to receive the honor.
