Israel Idonije is a retired American football defensive end who played for 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He was born on November 17, 1980, in Lagos, Nigeria and successfully migrated to Canada as a refugee with his family at a young age. Idonije's professional American football career began in 2003 when he signed with the Chicago Bears. Over the next 9 seasons, he played for the Bears, becoming a core member of their defensive line playing at the defensive end position. He was known as a versatile player who could play both defensive end and defensive tackle. In 2012, he signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions but would return to the Bears for the 2013 season. In 2014, he signed with the New York Giants, but due to a neck injury prior to the season, he retired from the NFL.
Despite being undrafted and a virtual unknown when he entered the NFL, Idonije's consistent play made him a fan favorite in Chicago, and he became a beloved member of the team's defense. In his professional career in the NFL, Idonije recorded 273 total tackles, 29 sacks, six forced fumbles, and 17 passes defended in 149 games. Off the field, Idonije founded the Israel Idonije Foundation, which provided support for children and families in impoverished communities.
