Jack Patera Autograph

Jack Patera is a former American football player and coach who is best known for leading the Seattle Seahawks through their early years of existence. Born in Yonkers, New York, in 1933, Patera played football in high school and college before beginning his coaching career in 1961 as an assistant at Utah State University. In 1968, he joined the NFL's Baltimore Colts as a defensive line coach, and in 1972, he was hired as the first-ever head coach of the Seahawks. More about Jack Patera

Patera is credited with building the Seahawks from scratch and turning them into a competitive team. In their first season, the Seahawks went 2-12, but Patera and his staff worked tirelessly to improve the team's roster and in 1976, the Seahawks finished with a record of 5-9. The following year, they won their division with a record of 9-7 and made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Patera's most successful season as a head coach came in 1978, when the Seahawks finished with a record of 9-7 and narrowly missed the playoffs.

After leaving the Seahawks in 1982, Patera worked as an assistant coach for several teams before retiring from coaching in 1992. He was inducted into the Seattle Seahawks Ring of Honor in 1989 in recognition of his contributions to the team.
