Jay Gruden was born on March 4, 1967, in Tiffin, Ohio. He is the younger brother of former NFL coach and player Jon Gruden. Jay began his playing career as a quarterback at the University of Louisville before joining the arena football league. He spent nine years as a player in the Arena Football League, leading the Tampa Bay Storm to four Arena Bowl titles. After retiring as a player, Jay embarked on his coaching career. Jay Gruden started his coaching stint as the offensive coordinator and head coach of the Orlando Predators in the Arena Football League. He then joined the NFL as an offensive assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before landing his first job as an offensive coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2011. In 2014, Jay was hired as the head coach of the Washington Redskins. He led the team to an NFC East title in his first season and helped quarterback Kirk Cousins establish himself as a starter.

While his time in Washington proved to be a mixed bag of success, Jay Gruden's contribution to the NFL is unquestionable. During his stint as a coach, he was lauded for his expertise in quarterback development and creative offensive schemes. Even though he was fired from the Redskins mid-season in 2019, his impact on the league will not be forgotten.
