During his career, Reed set a number of milestones and earned a reputation as an accomplished catcher. He won two World Series championships with the Reds in 1990 and the Giants in 2002. He also caught two no-hitters during his career, one by the Giants' John Burkett in 1991 and the other by Terry Mulholland for the Giants in 1990.

After retiring from his playing career in 2000, Reed went on to work as a coach and instructor. He has worked for various teams, including the Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, and San Diego Padres.
