After college, Schwartz moved on to work as a graduate assistant at the University of Maryland in 1989. He then moved to the NFL where he began his coaching career as a personnel scout with the Cleveland Browns. In his first year coaching in the NFL, Schwartz was a part of the Browns' staff as they made it to the AFC Championship. Schwartz then moved on to coach for several other NFL teams, including the Tennessee Titans, whom he helped lead to their first Super Bowl appearance. In 2009, Schwartz was named head coach of the Detroit Lions where he served until 2013. During his tenure as head coach of the Lions, Schwartz led the team to its first playoff appearance in over a decade in 2011.

After his time with the Lions, Schwartz served as the defensive coordinator for several teams, including the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, and Tennessee Titans. Schwartz is known for his innovative defensive schemes and aggressive play-calling on the field. Throughout his career, Schwartz has been celebrated for his attention to detail, his ability to motivate players, and his dedication to the sport.
