After college, Greene was drafted fourth overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969. He quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with, known for his quick sprints and powerful hits. He was a key part of the famous “Steel Curtain” defense of the 1970s that brought the team four Super Bowl championships. He was selected to the Pro Bowl 10 times and was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year twice. By the time he retired in 1981, he had played in 181 games, recording 78.5 sacks, an amazing feat for a defensive tackle.

Off the field, Greene was known for his leadership and mentoring of younger players. He was a model of professionalism to his teammates, and his dedication and drive earned him the nickname “Mean Joe.” In 1987 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. After his playing career, he became a coach and front office executive for the Steelers, earning two more Super Bowl rings as an assistant coach. Joe Greene’s impact on American football cannot be overstated, and he remains one of the most celebrated and respected football players to have ever played the game.
