Joey Browner was born on May 15, 1960, in Warren, Ohio. He grew up in a family of athletes — his father was a football player during his college years, and his three sisters were basketball players. Browner himself soon showed a keen interest in sports, although he excelled in multiple fields, including basketball and track and field in addition to football. Browner started his football career as a safety for the University of Southern California team, where he played from 1978 to 1982. During that time, he helped lead the team to a championship and won the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year award in 1982. Browner was subsequently drafted by the Minnesota Vikings, where he played from 1983 to 1991. Over the course of his career, Browner gained a reputation as one of the toughest safeties in the league. He was a six-time Pro Bowl player, a five-time All-Pro selection, and won the NFC Defensive Player of the Year award in 1985. He also set a record for most interception return yards in a game in 1985 with 195 yards, which still stands today.
