John Anderson was born on May 26, 1957, in Toronto, Canada. Anderson's love for hockey began when he was a teenager, and he played in the minor leagues in Canada. Anderson eventually retired as a player and became a coach, where he left his mark on the hockey world. In his first year as head coach of the Chicago Wolves in 1997-98, Anderson led his team to their first IHL playoff's appearance. A few years later, Anderson led the Wolves to their first Calder Cup championship in 2002. Anderson was twice named AHL Coach of the Year and compiled a record of more than 400 wins as a head coach in the AHL.
