At Ohio State, Brockington made a name for himself as a powerful runner and was instrumental in the school's Big Ten Conference championships in 1969 and 1970. His performances earned him recognition, including being named an All-American in both seasons.

Brockington was then drafted eighth overall by the Green Bay Packers in the 1971 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact in his rookie season, rushing for over 1,000 yards and earning Rookie of the Year honors. He continued to be a force in the league, making two Pro Bowl appearances and serving as an integral part of the Packers team that won Super Bowl XI.
