In 1990, McCants was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the NFL draft. He played with the team for three seasons and recorded 12 sacks and 157 tackles during his time with the team. McCants was known for his physicality and athleticism and was often positioned as a pass rusher.

McCants' NFL career was unfortunately short-lived as he struggled with injuries and substance abuse problems. He was released by the Buccaneers in 1993 and played briefly with the Arizona Cardinals and the Houston Oilers before retiring in 1995.
