Anderson started his professional football career in 1971 when he was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the NFL draft. Anderson spent his entire professional career with the Bengals, playing for 16 seasons from 1971 to 1986. In this time, he appeared in 192 games and threw for over 32,000 yards and 197 touchdowns, earning four TD-INT (touchdown and interception) seasons. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and won the NFL’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 1981. Anderson even led the Bengals to their first-ever Super Bowl appearance in 1982 but lost to the San Francisco 49ers. Anderson's jersey number (#14) was retired by the Bengals in 1989 in his honor.

Apart from his on-field success, Anderson has been involved in several coaching and administrative roles in football post his playing career. He served as an assistant coach at several colleges, including his alma mater, Augustana College. Furthermore, he was the Bengals' quarterbacks coach from 1988-1991 and also served as their offensive coordinator from 1993 to 1995. In recent years, he has been involved in various philanthropic activities and events dedicated to helping children and disabled people lead happier and better lives.
