Hill played for the Rams from 1979 to 1984, starting in all 80 games he participated in. He was a vital part of the Rams' offense, which had a potent running attack featuring running back Eric Dickerson. Hill was known for his agility and quickness, which helped him become one of the best passing blockers in the league. In 1980, Hill was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time, and he was later named to the All-Pro team in 1981. He was traded to the Houston Oilers in 1985 and played there for four seasons before spending his last two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.

After his retirement from playing professional football, Hill continued to be involved in the sport in various capacities. He started coaching at his alma mater, Texas Southern, before becoming an assistant coach with the Atlanta Falcons in 1995. In 1996, Hill was hired as the head coach of the Las Vegas Gladiators, an Arena Football League team. He was also involved in the NFL's Minority Coaching Fellowship program, which aimed to train minority coaches and provide them with opportunities for advancement in the league.
