Kevin O'Connell is a former quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). He was born on May 25, 1985, in San Diego, California. O'Connell went to La Costa Canyon High School, where he played football as a quarterback. He started all four years on the varsity team, leading the Mavericks to the CIF Division III championship in his final year. O'Connell threw for 7,224 yards and 63 touchdowns during his high school career.
After high school, O'Connell attended San Diego State University, where he continued his football career. He played for the Aztecs for four years, starting in 20 games. O'Connell's best season was in his senior year when he threw for 3,063 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also ran for 408 yards and six touchdowns. O'Connell finished his college career with 7,689 passing yards, 46 touchdowns, 664 rushing yards, and 13 rushing touchdowns.
In the 2008 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected O'Connell in the third round. He spent two seasons with the team, mostly as a backup quarterback. O'Connell then played one season each for the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and San Diego Chargers. O'Connell's professional football career was not as successful as his college years, but he remains one of the most accomplished quarterbacks to have played for San Diego State.
