After graduating from high school, Woodley attended the University of Michigan, where he played for the Wolverines from 2003 to 2006. During his college career, he was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and helped Michigan win two conference championships. In the 2007 NFL Draft, Woodley was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round. He played for the Steelers from 2007 to 2013 and was an integral part of their defense during his tenure. In 2009, Woodley was named to the Pro Bowl and helped the Steelers win Super Bowl XLIII.

Following his time with the Steelers, Woodley went on to play for the Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals. He retired from football in 2017 after a nine-year career. Woodley's contributions to the sport of football have been recognized by many, including the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame, which inducted him in 2017.
