Lemuel Joseph Barney, commonly known as Lem Barney, was born on September 8, 1945, in Gulfport, Mississippi. He started playing football in high school and was recruited by Jackson State University, where he became a standout player. Barney quickly made an impact in the league and had a successful 11-year career with the Lions. He was a defensive back and punt returner and was known for his speed and agility on the field. During his career, he made six Pro Bowl appearances and was named to the All-Pro team twice.
