In 1964, Kelly was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the eighth round of the NFL Draft, and he quickly made an impact. During his rookie season, Kelly played in all fourteen games, rushing for 299 yards and scoring three touchdowns. He continued to perform at a high level over the next few years, helping the Browns reach the playoffs in 1967 and 1968.
