During his NFL career, Murphy played as a safety for the Washington Redskins from 1977 to 1984. He was named the team's defensive captain for three seasons, was a Pro Bowler in 1983, and was instrumental in the team's victory in Super Bowl XVII. In 1985, Murphy served as the Redskins' player representative during the NFL strike.

In 2017, after his distinguished playing career, Murphy became the President and CEO of the Green Bay Packers. He had previously worked as the athletic director at his alma mater, Colgate University, and as the president and CEO of the NFL Players Association. Murphy's playing career, leadership skills, and business acumen have helped him create a lasting legacy in American football, and he remains an important figure in the sport's history.
