He was born on October 25, 1917, in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, and showed promise in football early on. Goldberg attended the University of Pittsburgh and played for the Panthers from 1936 to 1938. After his college career, Marshall Goldberg was selected by the Chicago Cardinals in the second round of the 1939 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he led the league in rushing yards with 405 and helped the Cardinals win the NFL Championship. Goldberg continued to play for the Cardinals for six seasons and became one of the team's most valuable players. He was also a two-time Pro Bowl selection during his time with the Cardinals.
