Mel Blount was born on April 10, 1948, in Vidalia, Georgia. He attended Southern University, where he played college football as a defensive back. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 1970 NFL Draft, and he quickly established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Blount was a six-time Pro Bowl selection, a four-time First-Team All-Pro selection, and he was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 1975. More about Mel Blount

Blount was a key member of the Steelers' dominant defenses of the 1970s that won four Super Bowls in a six-year span. He was known for his incredible size and strength, which made him a dominant force in press coverage. Blount was one of the first cornerbacks to use his size and physicality to disrupt receivers at the line of scrimmage, a technique known as "bumping and running."
