Mel Farr Autographs
Mel Farr was an American football player who spent his entire career in the National Football League (NFL). Born in Beaumont, Texas, in 1944, Farr’s family moved to Southern California when he was a child. It was there where Farr began to cultivate his love for football, excelling as a star athlete on his high school team. After graduating, Farr attended UCLA, playing for the Bruins for three years and being named First Team All-American in 1966.
In the 1967 NFL Draft, Farr was selected in the first round, as seventh overall pick, by the Detroit Lions. He made an immediate impact on the team, earning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 1967. Over his career, Farr played as a running back, and recorded a combined total of 3,072 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns. He was also known for his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, tallying 172 receptions for 1,374 yards and 10 touchdowns. Farr was particularly successful during the 1970 season, where he rushed for over 1,000 yards and was named as the Lions’ team MVP. He retired in 1973 at the age of 29, right before the beginning of what would have been his seventh professional season.
After retiring from football, Farr delved into the business world, becoming the owner of a major automobile dealership in Southern California. Despite his career as a businessman, his legacy in professional football has secured him a spot in the hearts of many fans. In addition to his individual accomplishments, Farr also contributed to a milestone in NFL history when he and his teammates in the backfield, Altie Taylor, Larry Walton, and Greg Landry, became known as the “Fearsome Foursome”. Their success in the 1970 season helped lead the Lions to a playoff appearance, cementing the group’s legacy in NFL history. Mel Farr passed away in 2015, but his impact on the sport of football and his community will always be remembered.
