Bass started his NFL career in 1967 when he was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of the NFL draft. He played his first three seasons with the Lions before he was traded to the Washington Redskins in 1970. It was with the Redskins that Bass made his mark as one of the premier defensive backs in the league. In his first season with the team, he recorded a career-high eight interceptions and was named to the Pro Bowl. He continued to play at a high level for the next eight seasons before retiring in 1978.

During his NFL career, Bass was regarded as one of the best defensive backs in the league. He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection, a two-time All-Pro, and helped the Washington Redskins win their first Super Bowl in 1972. He finished his career with 30 interceptions and five touchdowns, and was inducted into the Washington Redskins Ring of Fame in 2002. Mike Bass is remembered as a tough, hard-nosed player who always gave 100% on the field, and his legacy lives on in the annals of American football history.
