After high school, Mike attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he joined the football team as a backup quarterback. He later transferred to San Diego State University, where he played as a starting quarterback for two seasons. After graduation, Mike started his coaching career, beginning as an assistant coach for the San Diego State Aztecs football team.

Mike Martz is best known for his tenure as head coach for the St. Louis Rams, where he revolutionized the game with his "Greatest Show on Turf" offense. During his five-year tenure, he led the Rams to two Super Bowl appearances, including a victory in Super Bowl XXXIV, and helped quarterback Kurt Warner win the league's MVP award for two consecutive seasons. Martz was also the offensive coordinator for the Rams during their Super Bowl victory over the Tennessee Titans in 1999. Mike also served as head coach for the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears, amassing a career record of 56-36 as a head coach. Despite facing a fair amount of criticism throughout his career, Martz's innovative offensive schemes have left an indelible mark on American football, solidifying his place in the sport's history.
