Mike Mularkey is a former American football player and coach. He was born on November 19, 1961, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Mularkey played as a tight end at the University of Florida, where he was a part of the Gators team that won the Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship in 1980. After graduating from college, he was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the ninth round of the 1983 NFL draft. Mularkey played nine seasons in the NFL, primarily as a backup tight end for the Vikings and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Following his playing career, Mularkey became an NFL coach. He began his coaching career as the tight ends coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1994. He then went on to work as an offensive coordinator for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, and Atlanta Falcons. In 2012, Mularkey was named the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. During his two seasons with the Jaguars, he oversaw significant improvements in the team's offense, but the team failed to achieve a winning record under his leadership. Mularkey was fired by the Jaguars after the 2013 season.
In 2016, Mularkey was hired as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans. In his first season with the team, he led them to a 9-7 record and the franchise's first playoff appearance since 2008. Mularkey's offense was led by quarterback Marcus Mariota, who threw for 3,426 yards and 26 touchdowns in 15 games. After the season, Mularkey was given a contract extension by the Titans, but he was fired after the 2017 season following a playoff loss to the New England Patriots. Despite his mixed success as a head coach, Mularkey remains highly respected in the NFL community for his expertise on offense and his ability to develop players.
