In 1979, Coleman was selected in the eleventh round of the NFL draft by the Washington Redskins. He spent his entire 16-year career with the team. During his time with the Redskins, Coleman was a crucial part of their defense, helping the team win three Super Bowls in 1982, 1987, and 1991. He also played in 215 regular-season games, recording 17 sacks and six interceptions in his career.

Coleman is widely regarded as one of the best linebackers in Redskins history. He was inducted into the Central Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 and is also a member of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. In recognition of his contributions to the team, Coleman was named to the Washington Redskins Ring of Honor in 2015.
