After high school, Clements went on to play college football at Ohio State University. In his junior year, he was a first-team All-Big Ten selection and helped lead the Buckeyes to a national championship. Clements decided to forgo his senior year of college and declared for the NFL draft. He was drafted in the first round (21st overall) by the Buffalo Bills in 2001.

Clements played in the NFL for 12 seasons, spending time with the Bills, San Francisco 49ers, and Cincinnati Bengals. He was known for his exceptional talent as a cornerback and his physical style of play. Clements was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2004 and 2005, and he finished his career with 36 interceptions, 11 forced fumbles, and 8 touchdowns.
