Paul Dietzel Autographs
Paul Dietzel was a former American football coach and player who established an immense contribution to the game. He was born on September 5, 1924, in Fremont, Ohio. He started playing football in his school and went on to become a successful coach after his playing career. Known for his creativity, Dietzel was one of the most innovative coaches of his time. He was the main architect of the legendary Chinese Bandits defense of 1958 and the prolific wing-T offense.
Dietzel started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Miami University in Ohio in 1948. He then served as an assistant at LSU under the great Paul “Bear” Bryant in 1955. However, it was his stint as the head coach at LSU that established him as a true legend. He coached the Tigers for seven seasons and led them to a national championship in 1958, followed by an SEC championship the next year. Dietzel's unique scheme of having separate offensive and defensive units, rotating units, and a ruthless conditioning program helped him become one of the most successful coaches of his time.
After his stint at LSU, Dietzel coached at Army for four seasons before moving on to other endeavors. He continued to have affiliations with football and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014. He received many awards and honors during his illustrious career, including being named Football Writers Association of America national coach of the year in 1958. Paul Dietzel was more than just an American football coach; he was an icon who changed the game with his innovative ideas, relentless work ethic, and unique mindset.
