Phil McConkey Autographs
Phil McConkey was born on November 15, 1957, in Buffalo, New York. He was a skilled athlete from a young age, excelling in basketball, football, and track and field during his time at Buffalo’s St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. After graduating, McConkey went on to attend the United States Naval Academy, where he continued to play football as a wide receiver. His outstanding performance on the field earned him recognition as a first-team All-American in his senior year. After graduating from the academy, McConkey served as a lieutenant in the Navy before pursuing a career in professional football.
Despite going undrafted in 1981, McConkey tried out for and ultimately made the New York Giants’ roster as a free agent. He spent three seasons with the team, playing a key role in their Super Bowl victory in 1987. McConkey’s speed, agility, and sure-handedness as a receiver made him a valuable asset to the Giants’ offense during his time with the team. In 1984, he was named the team’s Special Teams Player of the Year, showcasing his versatility as a player. McConkey continued to play professional football with the Green Bay Packers and the Arizona Cardinals before retiring in 1989.
Throughout his career, Phil McConkey was known for his fierce competitiveness, quick reflexes, and ability to make big plays in high-pressure situations. He is considered one of the most successful undersized players in NFL history, standing at just 5’10” and 167 pounds. McConkey’s contribution to the sport of football, both as a player and as a coach, earned him a place in the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Off the field, McConkey has been involved in various philanthropic ventures, including the Head Health Network, which focuses on concussion research in football. Today, McConkey continues to remain actively involved in the sports world, serving as a commentator and analyst for various NFL games.
