During his collegiate career, he played in 51 games and passed for over 13,400 yards and 95 touchdowns. This made him the most prolific passer in school history and earned him a solid reputation as a top quarterback prospect heading into the 2004 NFL Draft.

In the 2004 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers selected Rivers with the fourth overall pick. He was traded to the Chargers from the New York Giants for fellow quarterback Eli Manning. Rivers quickly became a household name in the NFL, garnering six Pro Bowl selections and leading the Chargers to numerous playoff runs during his tenure.
