After high school, Septien attended Southwest Texas State University, where he played for the school's football program. He was a standout performer during his college career, earning All-Southland Conference honors in 1973 and 1974. In 1977, Rafael Septien entered the NFL draft and was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round. However, he was later traded to the Dallas Cowboys, for whom he played from 1978 to 1986. During his time with the Cowboys, Septien established himself as one of the most reliable kickers in the NFL. He holds the record as the team's all-time leading scorer, with 881 points, and helped the Cowboys win three NFC championships and reach four Super Bowls.

Unfortunately, Septien's football career came to an abrupt end in 1987 when he was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child. He eventually pleaded guilty and received probation, but the incident undoubtedly tarnished his previously impeccable reputation. Nevertheless, Rafael Septien's achievements as a football player must be recognized.
