Browner's professional football career began in 1978 when he was drafted as a first-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals as a defensive lineman. He was part of the Bengals' dominant defense line known as "The Bruise Brothers," along with Eddie Edwards and Dan Ross. Browner played nine seasons for the Bengals, where he made a name for himself as a fierce pass rusher, accumulating 59.5 sacks and forcing 8 fumbles in his career.

Browner's dedication to the sport earned him prestigious accolades such as the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1978 and the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 1986. He also earned Pro Bowl honors twice and was a member of the NFL All-Pro team in 1981. Ross Browner retired from the NFL in 1987 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
