After graduating from college, Hurd declared himself eligible for the 2006 NFL Draft and was selected in the fifth round by the Dallas Cowboys. Hurd played for the Cowboys for five seasons, from 2006 to 2010, and quickly established himself as a valuable player on special teams. He was known for his excellent kick coverage ability and his contributions to the Cowboys' success in the NFL. Hurd's best season with the Cowboys was in 2008 when he caught 19 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown.

In 2011, Hurd signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Bears, but his career came to an abrupt end later that year when he was arrested for drug trafficking. Hurd had been involved in a drug-dealing operation and was caught after attempting to purchase a significant amount of cocaine from an undercover agent. Hurd's actions led to his immediate suspension from the NFL and eventually, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
