Sonny Jurgensen was a professional American football quarterback who played for 18 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He was born on August 23, 1934, in Wilmington, North Carolina, and attended Duke University where he was a three-sport athlete. After college, Jurgensen was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 1957 NFL Draft. In 1964, Jurgensen had his breakout season, leading the NFL in passing yards, completions, and touchdowns. He was named the league’s most valuable player and helped lead the Eagles to the NFL Championship Game. However, they lost to the Cleveland Browns. In 1965, Jurgensen was traded to the Washington Redskins, where he spent the final 11 seasons of his career. He continued to put up impressive numbers, including passing for over 3,000 yards in five consecutive seasons from 1966 to 1970.
