Steve Tensi is a former American football quarterback who was born on December 5, 1942, in St. Augustine, Florida. He grew up in the city and later attended Leon High School in Tallahassee. Tensi started his football career at Leon High School, where he played both football and baseball. During his college years, Tensi was an outstanding quarterback for the Florida State Seminoles, where he led the team to the 1964 Gator Bowl victory. He was later selected as a first-team All-American by both the Associated Press and United Press International in 1965. After his college career, Tensi was drafted in the fourth round of the 1965 NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers. He played for the Chargers from 1965 to 1966, where he started nine games and threw for a total of 1,409 yards and 11 touchdowns.

In 1967, Tensi signed with the Denver Broncos, where he spent five seasons leading the team as its starting quarterback. He had a remarkable year in 1968, where he threw for 2,942 yards, 24 touchdowns, and led the Broncos to the AFL playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Tensi retired from the NFL in 1973 after playing for the Atlanta Falcons for two seasons. After his football career, Tensi remained active in the sport, serving as a quarterbacks coach and analyzing the game for ESPN.
