Tim Couch was born on July 31, 1977, in Hyden, Kentucky, and grew up in nearby Leslie County. The son of a high school football coach, Couch began playing organized football at a young age and quickly showed a talent for the game. After graduating from high school, Couch enrolled at the University of Kentucky, where he became the starting quarterback as a freshman in 1996. Over the course of his college career, he set school records for passing yards and touchdowns and earned numerous honors, including being named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Offensive Player of the Year in 1998. In 1999, Couch was selected first overall by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL draft, making him the first player in the franchise's new era. He went on to play five seasons for the Browns, but injuries and inconsistent play limited his success in the NFL.
