Christensen was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 1978 NFL draft but was later waived. He then signed with the New York Giants, where he struggled to make an impact. It was not until 1983, when he joined the Los Angeles Raiders, that his career truly took off. Christensen played for the Raiders for eight seasons, became a five-time Pro Bowler, and was named an All-Pro twice. In 1983, he set a record for the most receptions in a season by a tight end, catching 92 passes for 1,247 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also won two Super Bowls with the Raiders in 1983 and 1984.

Christensen retired after the 1988 season with a total of 5,872 receiving yards and 41 touchdowns. After his playing career, he transitioned into broadcasting, working for NBC, CBS, and ESPN, among others. Unfortunately, Christensen passed away on November 13, 2013, at the age of 57, due to complications during liver transplant surgery. Despite his untimely death, Christensen is remembered as one of the best tight ends to ever play in the NFL, leaving a lasting legacy in American football.
