Marinovich's football career began at Trabuco Hills High School in California, where he became a record-setting quarterback that led his team to a California Interscholastic Federation championship in 1986. He later enrolled at the University of Southern California (USC) where he played for the USC Trojans football team. Marinovich made waves in college football, and he was instrumental in the team's Rose Bowl appearance in 1990. He was labeled as the "Robo QB," primarily because of his strict physical training regimen, which his father designed for him.

Marinovich was drafted by the then-Los Angeles Raiders as the 24th pick in the 1991 NFL Draft. His professional career started well with some impressive performances, such as his 390 passing yards in a game against the Miami Dolphins in his rookie year. However, his career took a turn after a series of personal problems, including drug addiction, which led to his release from the Raiders in 1993. He later had stints with several other teams, but never really lived up to the expectations that were placed on him at the beginning of his career. Nevertheless, Marinovich's brief professional football career still holds significant interest and has become part of the NFL history for his incredible talent and ability as a quarterback.
