Harmon's football career at the University of Michigan is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable in the history of American college football. In 1940, Harmon won the Heisman Trophy, which is the most prestigious award in college football. He was also the first player to win every major award in college football, including the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Trophy, and the Associated Press Player of the Year award. Harmon set records that stood for decades and was a two-time All-American selection.

After his college career, Harmon went on to play professional football for the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Americans. His professional football career was shortened due to military service during World War II. Despite his short professional career, Harmon is remembered as one of the greatest football players of all time. He was posthumously inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954, and his number 98 jersey was retired by the University of Michigan in 1995.
