Tom Hicks was born on September 25, 1946, in Dallas, Texas. He attended the University of Texas, where he played football for the Longhorns as a linebacker. Hicks was an All-American selection in 1968 and helped lead the team to a national championship the following year. He was also named as the Southwest Conference Player of the Year in 1968 and 1969. In 1970, Tom Hicks was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the NFL Draft. He played for the Bears for four seasons, starting in 46 games at linebacker. In 1974, Hicks was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, where he played for two seasons before retiring in 1976. Despite only playing for six seasons, Hicks had a successful career in professional football and was known for his hard-hitting style of play.

After retiring from football, Tom Hicks went on to become one of the most successful businessmen in Texas. He founded the investment firm Hicks & Haas in 1984 and later bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in 1998. Hicks also owned the Dallas Stars hockey team and ran the Hicks Sports Group, which owned and operated multiple sports franchises.
