In 1954, Landry retired as a player to begin his coaching career with the New York Giants. He became the team's defensive coordinator and quickly developed a reputation as a brilliant strategist. In 1960, Landry was named the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, a newly-formed team that struggled in its first few seasons. However, Landry's innovative and disciplined coaching style helped turn the team into a powerhouse, leading them to two Super Bowl victories and five NFC championships during his 29-year tenure as head coach.

In addition to his success on the field, Landry left an indelible mark on American football with his innovations and contributions to the game. He was the architect of the "flex defense," a formation that revolutionized defensive play by allowing players to adjust to different offensive formations on the fly. He also developed the idea of the "shotgun formation," a popular offensive scheme used by many teams today. Tom Landry's legacy as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history is unquestioned, and he has been enshrined in both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
