Tom Osborne was born on February 23, 1937, in Hastings, Nebraska. He grew up in a football family, with his father a high school football coach, and his mother being a passionate football fan. Osborne's own football career began at the University of Nebraska, where he was a standout quarterback from 1955-1959. He earned All-American honors his senior year and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 1960 NFL Draft. After retiring from coaching, Osborne remained active in college athletics and philanthropy. He served as the athletic director at the University of Nebraska from 2007-2013 and helped oversee several major construction projects, including a new basketball arena and an indoor practice facility for football. Additionally, he founded the TeamMates Mentoring Program, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people achieve success in school and in life.
