McSorley had an outstanding career at Bishop O'Connell High School. He was a dual-threat quarterback and threw for over 5,000 yards and 40 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,300 yards and 25 touchdowns during his high school career. He then committed to Penn State University to play college football.

During his time at Penn State, McSorley made a name for himself as a record-breaking quarterback. He set multiple school records, including most career passing yards, most career touchdowns, and most career completions. He led his team to a Big Ten championship in 2016 and was named the MVP of the conference championship game. He was also a finalist for the Manning Award and was named to the First-Team All-Big Ten in both 2017 and 2018.
